18-year-old killed in Jeff Davis Parish crash; driver charged with vehicular homicide 1

An 18-year-old is dead and another passenger seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash on LA Highway 383 in Jeff Davis Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with vehicular homicide.

The crash, which took place just after 2 p.m. Monday, claimed the life of 18-year-old Alijah J. Droddy of Kinder, police said.

An investigation revealed a pickup truck, driven by 18-year-old Hunter Joseph Pelican of Kinder, was traveling north on LA 383 at a high rate of speed. The truck ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a mailbox before traveling back onto the roadway and striking another mailbox on the opposite side of the road, State Police said. The truck then rolled over several times before coming to rest on the side of the roadway.

Pelican, Droddy, and a third occupant were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and were ejected from the vehicle, troopers said. Droddy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pelican sustained moderate injuries and the other passenger sustained life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to a Lake Charles area hospital for treatment.

Pelican, who remains hospitalized, has been charged with vehicular homicide, reckless operation, first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, and not wearing a seat belt.

A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Jefferson Davis Parish, La. (KLFY) – A single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 383 just south of Village Cemetery Road in Jefferson Davis Parish claimed the life of 18-year-old Alijah J. Droddy of Kinder.

According to State Police, the crash happened Monday shortly 2 p.m.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that a Dodge pickup truck, driven by 18-year-old Hunter Joseph Pelican of Kinder, was traveling north on LA 383 at a high rate of speed.

Police say the Dodge ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a mailbox before traveling back onto the roadway and striking another mailbox on the opposite side of the road.

The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to rest on the side of the roadway, police said.

Jefferson Davis Parish –  Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 383 just south of Village Cemetery Road in Jefferson Davis Parish on May 3, 2021, at approximately 2:10 p.m. The crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Alijah J. Droddy of Kinder.

KINDER-Funeral Services for Alijah Jrake Droddy, 18, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7, 2021, at Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Kinder. Rev. Ren Watkins will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Lukes Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Homes. The family will receive visitors at Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home on Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 3-9 p.m. Visitation will resume on Friday morning from 8 a.m. until the time of service.

Known for his love of a good adventure, Alijah was also an extremely easygoing teen who readily held the loyalty and respect of his friends and family. He enjoyed riding his dirt bike and fishing. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Working towards his welding certification to start a career, Alijah participated on the Kinder High School Welding Team, ranking 8th in the state. Among a few favorite things, he appreciated hip-hop and rap music and loved his BBQ ribs. Alijah was dearly loved by all. He will be forever missed and unconditionally treasured by his family and friends. 

Those left to cherish Alijah's memory include his father and step-mother, Joseph Droddy and Brittney Fontenot of Kinder; four brothers, Kane Manuel of Oberlin, Trenton Segura of Westlake, Eli and Kasen Droddy of Kinder; Apo & Barbara Droddy of Kinder; MawMaw, Tanya Clark and husband, & "Tigger" of Carlyss; Grandma, Sandra Wing of Westlake; Nanny, Jan Smith of Winnfield; grandmother, Shanna Perkins of Elton; grandfather, Randal Droddy; Cosi-Paula Leger; aunts, Ashley Carson, Delma Leger, Elizabeth Droddy, Kristy Perkins and Faye Campbell; and uncles, Randall Droddy and Johnny Leger.

Alijah is preceded in death by his mother, Suzanne Miller; great grandmother, Lillian Leger; great grandfathers, Isaac Leger and Max Smith; aunts, Timer Newman and Dana Smith; and uncle, Bryan Smith. Pallbearers honored to serve are-Noah Sickey, Dylan John, Buddy Martin, Maddox Pierrotti, C.J. May and Darius Bland.

Honorary Pallbearers honored to serve are-Isaac Droddy, Skylar Droddy, Kane Manuel, Eli Droddy and Kasen Droddy.
