Cloud of Witnesses: The Rev. Alcide "Al" Barnaby, Founder of Integrity's RI Chapter

On May 19th, the Rev. Alcide Barnaby, Jr., was one of the honorees at the 30th Annual AIDS Candlelight Memorial, held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Providence, Rhode Island. Rev. Barnaby, who died June 28th, 2012, was the founder of the Rhode Island Chapter of Integrity in 1996 and served as its Convener, among many other gifts to the LGBT community, persons living with HIV/AIDS, and the church.

Among his accomplishments, Rev. Barnaby was the first openly gay and partnered priest in the Diocese of Rhode Island.  He and his partner of 30 years, Daniel Harvey, son of Arthur Harvey and Gertrude Parisien, were married at Trinity Church in Canton, Mass., in 2011. Al, as he was widely known, volunteered at various times with many organizations including the National Episcopal AIDS Coalition, Episcopal Relief & Development, St. Mary's Home for Children, AIDS Quilt Rhode Island, among others.

Rev. Barnaby was active in church governance at all levels, serving on Diocesan Council and numerous committees.  He served as a Deputy to General Convention in 2003, an alternate in 2006 and a volunteer in 2009.  He also served as a clergy representative to Province I, the New England dioceses of the Episcopal Church.

"Al, and I were among the few  'out' members of Integrity on the Province 1 Provincial Synod for many years," said Margo McMahon, a Integrity Lifetime Member from the Diocese of Western Massachusetts.  "I got to know Al and Dan through various Integrity events and especially through serving as Deputies together at General Convention and hanging out together. I wish you could have had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful person, now walking among the other saints of Integrity in God's Kingdom."

"When I think of Al, so many things come to mind..... He was a pioneer in the Diocese of Rhode Island for inclusivity, challenging the Church to embrace fully the LGBT community," said Kit Tobin, Integrity's Diocesan Organizer - Rochester NY.  "(I remember) the Deans' meeting with Bishop Wolfe in the 90s, when Al stated he would continue to bless same sex couples, and of course he did!"

"My 'memory picture' of Al with a twinkle in his eyes and a broad smile on the platform for the closing blessing at Integrity's General Convention Eucharist," Tobin continued.  "He was a mentor for me when I was 'in process' - always encouraging, the one who was there for me when others seemed to be putting up barriers. A deeply spiritual, loving man with a great sense of humor - always reaching out his hand to any and all who he sensed were in need.  He is sorely missed. I hold him in my heart."

Missouri City woman charged with murder because of husband's dying words to police 1

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

MISSOURI CITY, Texas (KTRK) -- A Missouri City woman was arrested Tuesday because of her husband's final words before he died. Jacqueline Thomas, 43, is charged with murder in the death of her husband, 42-year-old Eugene Liger.

Missouri City police responded to a shooting call on Americana Drive in the Lexington Square neighborhood before 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Upon arrival, Thomas reportedly told investigators she accidentally shot her husband. However, investigators say Liger's dying words to detectives convinced them that the shooting was no accident.

Liger was found with a gunshot wound and transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police say a 5-month-old child was present at the time of the shooting but was not injured.

Eugene Liger Blames Jacqueline Thomas: Dying Words of Missouri City, Texas Man Inform Police That Fatal Shooting Was Not Accidental 2

By  Alden Etra  -

Eugene Liger was shot and killed in Missouri City, Texas on Tuesday, July 21. His killer was identified in a shocking statement just before he drew his last breath in a Texas hospital. Liger’s wife, 43-year-old Jacqueline Thomas, claimed that her husband’s shooting was an accident, but things changed when her husband revealed the truth just before he died.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Jacqueline Thomas called 911 around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday claiming that her 42-year-old husband was shot in the chest and needed medical assistance. In the initial report, Thomas told police that the shooting was accidental. Per Eugene Liger’s dying words: it wasn’t.

Police officers arrived at 1010 American Drive in Missouri City just after the call. First responders rushed Liger to the hospital where life-saving measures were attempted but ultimately failed. Before he died, however, Thomas’ husband revealed that the shooting was on purpose, and not as his wife previously claimed.

Jacqueline Thomas’ husband, Eugene Liger, who was shot in the chest at 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, ID’d his wife as the shooter just before he died. Thomas claimed the shooting was accidental, which goes against the statement of the deceased. Photo Credit: Missouri City Police Department

Police Captain Paul Poulton from the Missouri City Police Department reported that “at the scene,” Eugene Liger “was still conscious and alert enough to give a statement that was inconsistent with his wife’s statement.” The captain continued, saying that the statement “did not even closely match his wife’s comments.”

“Once officers arrived, looked at the scene and some inconsistencies in the stories and a statement by the victim,” Captain Poulton said. “It was discovered it was not so accidental.”

Liger’s exact statement has not yet been revealed to the public. Police have not clarified how Eugene Liger’s dying words incriminated his wife. Despite the lack of specifics, Jacqueline Thomas is sitting behind bars after Liger allegedly blamed her with his last breath.

Investigators did reveal that there was some kind of disturbance at the home just before the shooting. The nature of the alleged argument has not been revealed and authorities are still gathering information. As of now, it’s not entirely clear what happened inside the Lexington Square home.

“Once the investigation is complete, police will turn the case over to us to review for formal charges,” the Fort Bend County executive assistant district attorney explained. Jacqueline Thomas is behind bars at Fort Bend County Jail after she allegedly shot her husband in the chest.

According to reports, Liger sustained a fatal wound to his upper torso and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have not identified a motive in the shooting and have not formally charged Jacqueline Thomas with a crime. It’s unclear whether she will face manslaughter charges or if she will be charged with murder.

Jacqueline Thomas and Eugene Liger shared a 5-month-old child. The baby was home when the fatal shooting occurred, though it’s unclear who is caring for the baby after the deadly incident. Thomas and Liger had four children from prior relationships.

Missouri City has a relatively small crime rate compared to its neighbors. The Texas city’s crime rate is only 95, which is higher than 38.7 percent of U.S. cities, but still 2.9 times smaller than the U.S. average. Its neighboring city, Houston, has a crime rate of 523.

Missouri City woman accused of killing husband 3

A woman who allegedly called 911 and reported her husband had been accidentally shot was later arrested and charged with murder in connection to the man’s death, Missouri City police allege.

Jacqueline Elaine Thomas, 43, is accused of killing Eugene Liger, 42, of Missouri City, according to Fort Bend County court records.

Thomas’ bond was set at $250,000, according to court records, and she remained jailed as of Monday afternoon.

Police at about 2:30 a.m. last Tuesday, July 20, said they received a call about possible gunshots and responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Americana Lane, where they found Liger with a gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency personnel transported Liger to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Thomas allegedly called 911 and told police Liger’s shooting was accidental, said Capt. Paul Poulton, spokesperson for the Missouri City Police Department. But police found conflicting information during an initial investigation, including a conflicting account from Liger before he died, Poulton said.

A 5-month-old child was also at the home at the time of the alleged shooting, but was unharmed, according to police.

Texas Husband’s Dying Words Convince Police He Was Murdered by His Wife

INCRIMINATING

Lawrence Ukenye, Breaking News Intern, Published Jul. 21, 2021 11:36AM ET

A Texas woman who claimed she accidentally shot her husband has been arrested for murder after her dying husband was able to claim it was intentional, according to Missouri City police. When officers arrived at the couple’s home at 3 a.m. Tuesday, they found Eugene Liger, 42, with a single gunshot wound. Jacqueline Thomas, 43, told them the shooting was accidental however Liger’s last words to police suggested otherwise. “Once officers arrived, looked at the scene and some inconsistencies in the stories and a statement by the victim, it was discovered it was not so accidental,” said Capt Paul. Paulton. Liger later died in a hospital.

Texas Woman Claimed She Shot Her Husband by Accident, But the Victim’s Dying Words Led to Her Arrest: Police 5

ALBERTO LUPERON

A dying man’s last words got police to arrest his wife as the killer, according to authorities is Missouri City, Texas. Jacqueline Elaine Thomas, 43, was booked into the Fort Bend County Jail on Tuesday for allegedly murdering husband Eugene Liger, 42.

The suspect shot the victim at a home while a 5-month-old child was there, according to police. The precise circumstances of the shooting remain publicly unclear, however.

Early Tuesday at approximately 2:27 a.m., police got a 911 call about someone being shot, wrote Missouri City Police Captain Paul Poulton in an email to Law&Crime.

“The caller made statements leading them to believe it was an accidental shooting,” he wrote. “Upon officers arrival they found a male victim (Liger) shot in the torso. The alleged shooter was his wife (Thomas, J). The victim was initially conscious and alert at the scene and gave a statement that was not consistent with his wife’s story.”

Liger said something before his death, police claim. This allegedly clashed with his wife’s version of events. Poulton did not elaborate on what was said, but he did note its significance.

“After the initial investigation and collection of evidence, probable cause was developed to charge the wife with the shooting,” Poulton wrote. “The husband was later pronounced dead at the hospital, leading to the charge of murder. There was a 5 month old infant in the house at the time that was unharmed.”
